Introducing ERRA

Pyongyang City Sessions asked Nottingham producer ERRA to put together a small mix and also gained an interview in the process. Heres the outcome...
(Taken from Pyongyang City Sessions at - http://www.pycsessions.com)

"Erra has been a name on the radar since his certified club smasher ‘Gettin Happs’ literally (not really) made me lose my shit when I heard it dropped in one of  Synkro and Indigo’s sets earlier this year.  Since then, his consistency and fresh take on House/Grime/UKG has kept us more than interested.
We asked him to put together our inaugral mix, and we’re very happy (and proud) to report that he’s obliged; even better, its a doozy, brilliantly representing the freshest sounds of the moment.
Being a lovely chap, he also gave us a few words while we were at it.  Check after the break for the mix link – both WAV and MP3 versions are available – then while that’s downloading, check the damn interview."

First up, tell me a little bit about yourself..
I’m Luke, 19, based in Nottingham. I write tracks and DJ under the alias Erra and have been doing so for the last two and a half years.
What do you make your music on?
Reason, although more recently I’ve been rewiring with Cubase.
Who are your main influences?
There’s tons. The harder/breaksy side of UKG and the sort of pre-dubstep style of garage is definitely an element of my sound that you can pinpoint in certain tracks. Guys like Wookie, Sticky, Narrows, Artwork, Zed Bias, Jammin (Zinc), El-B, DJ Abstract.
I was inspired in my early teens by the harder and bass heavier grime instrumentals, guys like Bigshot, Alias, Jon E Cash, Youngstar, Low Deep and a lot of the old Wiley stuff was really appealing to me and is what inspired me to start writing in the first place.
A lot of the Nottingham based guys such as Geiom, Littlefoot, Lone & the Wigflex guys have all been a big inspiration to me also.
Following on from that, how would you describe your sound at the moment?
Essentially, 130 – 137bpm, heavy influences from House/Grime/Garage, crisp hats, lots of groove, lots of detuned leads and pads, 8-bit synths, usually odd (but not out of place) sounding chopped vocal samples, warping basslines and thudding subs.
Cake music…
Who’s making music that excites you?
Well in terms of the more established names, Ramadanman who has been setting the standards, Night Slugs have been putting out some of the most exciting music this year, Floating Points, 2562 & AMUS, Blawan, Fantastic Mr Fox, James Blake, Untold, Jamie Grind, Shortstuff, Pariah, Taylor (Must check), Lone & Geiom who has been making some sick halftime D&B stuff.
Among the guys who maybe aren’t as recognised: Littlefoot, who is making some really sick speedy g-cross Detroit house type stuff, Spare, Kingthing, Resketch, Artek, Mele, Mistamen, Aleks Zen, CRST.
Tons more..
What releases have you got lined up?
Well, I have a four track digital EP out now on L2S Recordings entitled ‘Cake Music Vol.1′, shouts to Whistla. I also have a 12″ forthcoming on Berkane Sol next year, with the tracks ‘Stax’ & ‘Jookup’ on the flip as well as a four track EP forthcoming on the Glasgow based label Fortified Audio (out to Gostwan) although the tracks haven’t been written yet. Hopefully more releases to come.
Cake is clearly important to you, if you could only eat cake for the rest of your life, which one would it be?
(A good few minutes of deliberation passes)
Tough one there…
I mean, I’m a sucker for iced Madeira. I also love fondant fancies.
It’s a tie between the two I reckon!
